One of the most common questions I get asked as a pet photographer is related to how someone can capture the personality of their pets in beautiful photos. So I thought I would share some of my best tips that will have you grab your camera and get ready for an afternoon of snapping some pictures of your beloved furry companion!
Tip #1: Get to Know Your Pet
Before you start snapping pictures away, take some time to get to know your pet, which you already do every day. But really pay close attention for a few days to their specific behaviours and motivation. Observe what they like and dislike, what makes them happy, what times of day they are better behaved, etc. This will help you to capture their personality in photos.
Tip #2: Play with Angles
Don't be afraid to experiment with different angles when taking photos of your pet. Get low and close to the ground to capture their perspective, or climb up high to get a bird's eye view. This will add variety to your photos and help capture your pet's unique personality.
Tip #3: Focus on Their Eyes
The eyes are the windows to the soul, and the same goes for your pet. Make sure to focus on their eyes when taking photos to capture their emotions and personality. You can even try getting up close and personal with a wide-angle lens to emphasize their eyes. But be aware that some face-licking and happy smiles might occur in the process.
Tip #4: Use Props and Accessories
Props and accessories can add a fun and playful touch to your pet photos. Use their favourite toys, blankets, or even outfits to showcase their personality. Just make sure to keep it simple and not overdo it, and to pay close attention to any sign of discomfort from your pet – you want the focus to be on your 4 legged friends, not on the props.
Tip #5: Practice, Practice, Practice
Last but not least, practice makes perfect! The more you practice taking photos of your pet, the better you'll get at capturing their personality. So grab your camera and start snapping away – you never know when you'll capture that perfect shot.
